Our Assistant Reservations Manager, Megan and Luxury Sales consultant Charissa were lucky enough to sail from Edinburgh to Lerwick. Their insight into the whole cruise and experience can be found below.

Embarking on the Seabourn Venture was a lovely surprise because, when I think of expedition, I automatically think of cold destinations however, the artificial fireplaces in the expedition lounge really brought a cosy feel to the ship. During the safety briefing, you are informed of all necessary safety drills and there is also an introduction from the expedition team.

On our first morning, we decided to order room service for breakfast. There were many choices which you could select the night before and the staff made a lovely set-up with a perfect view as we were sailing into Invergordon with the sun shining. We were then called to collect our Parka’s and boots and found where we were to keep these during the trip.

We had our first excursion – Culloden, Cawdor Castle & Clava Cairns. It was so interesting to see the battle site and the exquisite gardens at the castle. The tour guides on the coach were filled with knowledge and provided interesting details of sites which we saw along our journey, as well as answering any questions we had during our visits.

Later that day, we enjoyed a hosted dinner with the expedition Leader, Seb Coulthard who shared many stories of his time on board and his naval background.

Dinner in The Restaurant was brilliant. The choices were vast and the flavours incredible. Everything was cooked to perfection and the staff were more than happy to help and make recommendations from the menu, which was helpful when there was so much to choose from and try!

We ended our evening by enjoying drinks in the Constellation Lounge whilst listening to gentle live music. However, this is also a beautiful setting for your pre-dinner cocktails as it features panoramic views which is fantastic when sailing away from port.

Our second excursion of this cruise was the Ring of Brodgar & Stromness Town Experience. We took a short but scenic drive around Scapa Bay before arriving at Stromness. The town is a quaint fishing town known for its fresh seafood, and this was incorporated into that evening’s dinner menus. The Ring of Brodgar was very interesting and we learnt of the many theories of why the stones were placed there. The weather on top of the hill was slightly cooler than we had previously experienced during the trip, but the complimentary parkas kept us warm and dry from the winds and sea spray. Our tour guide Jane had lots of knowledge of the surrounding area as well as the Norse heritage.

The Colonnade is always open for lunch when you arrive back on the ship and the staff are always happy to welcome you back on board. The Colonnade has an open buffet which changes daily but also, has a set menu which you can choose from. This includes around 6 dishes which do not change.

We spent the rest of the afternoon at leisure relaxing around the ship.

For dinner, we dined in The Club where they offer sushi between 6 pm and 9 pm. There is a menu which you can choose from but we asked the chef for a platter so we could try a bit of everything. It was all so fresh, and the flavour combinations were spot on. Our personal favourites were the spicy tuna rolls and the barbecued eel. We highly recommended dining here if you’re not feeling up to another big meal.

Seabourn arranged local entertainment for the evening. It was a family that showcased traditional music and dancing. It was fantastic to watch and set the tone for a fabulous feel-good evening. As we were sailing away, they played their bagpipes and danced on the pier to wave us off. It really was a special touch.

On arrival into Fair Isle, the captain skilfully and safely got us to anchor as the sea was quite rocky at this point. As the weather conditions calmed, we were lucky enough to go kayaking. This was a surreal experience and highly recommended. It was a humbling experience to see the wildlife in their natural environment. The seals got very close and were so inquisitive and the puffins were all around us. We also had the ship’s photographer and videographer on board which was fantastic as they were both able to capture incredible pictures for us, which we are now able to keep forever. These photos and videos were also used in their end-of-trip video.

Kevin, who is one of the ship’s submarine pilots, took us on a tour of the submarine garage. Seabourn has two submarines on each of their expedition ships, so it was incredible to see these up close and hear how they are operated. Generally, passengers have around 45 minutes of diving time which is a very generous amount. The design of the domes is ingenious as once underwater, your view appears as if the glass had disappeared giving it a real immersive experience.

For the evening, the entertainment team hosted a British Pub night in the Constellation Lounge offering traditional British food and drink including fish and chips, pies and Pimm’s. They also had live music from the onboard pianist Neal and singers Elise & Eli entertaining us with songs from The Beatles, The Kinks, and other well-known British bands.

Our final day started with a hearty breakfast in The Colonnade which is buffet style. The cooked food is always piping hot, the fruit is so fresh, and the eggs are cooked to order.

As the sun was shining in beautiful Mousa, we decided to grab a coffee from Seabourn Square and sit outside on the deck with a blanket to keep us warm whilst taking in the breathtaking views.

The ship departed Mousa around 11 am before setting sail for the Isle of Noss and during this time, the expedition team gave us a recap and briefing. During these talks, they discuss the place we have just been and what we can expect next. It’s really informative because during an expedition cruise, a lot of elements are dependent on weather and sea conditions and so plans can change last minute.

The expedition team offered a zodiac tour to all guests around the Isle of Noss. This was an amazing way to see the vast amount of sea birds in the area and we even spotted some seals. Our zodiac driver Luciano pointed out to us the different types of birds and information about them. It was incredible to watch hundreds of birds flying above as you sailed past the cliffs. The drivers are also fantastic at getting the zodiacs into the best positions for those photo opportunities!

We ended our last evening on board with another faultless meal in The Restaurant followed by drinks in The Club whilst listening to Neal on the piano.

We were sad our time on board came to an end so quickly but recognised how lucky we are to not only sell such an amazing product but to experience it too. We loved how relaxed it was and how itinerary-focused these types of cruises are, but you still get the incredible, ultra-luxury, Seabourn service.

For more information on Seabourn Expedition Cruises, please see our website www.sovereigncruise.co.uk or for a quotation at the guaranteed lowest fares, please call our team of Luxury Sales Consultants on 03331 224466 who will be happy to assist you.

The Sovereign Cruise Club was extremely fortunate to be able to have members of staff sail onboard Seabourn Venture recently as she made her way through the British Isles to Iceland.
