Joining the cruise in Bari (Italy), they sailed to Kotor (Montenegro), Corfu, Cephalonia, and Santorini and disembarked in Athens. Each destination was remarkable, but Kotor left a lasting impression. The views were breathtaking, and watching the sunrise as they sailed through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sovereigncruise.co.uk\/cruise-destinations\/norwegian-fjords\">fjords<\/a> was truly a magical experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4527\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sovereigncruise.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Copy-of-Queen-Anne-Solus-146-9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sovereigncruise.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Copy-of-Queen-Anne-Solus-146-9.png 602w, https:\/\/www.sovereigncruise.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Copy-of-Queen-Anne-Solus-146-9-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.sovereigncruise.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Copy-of-Queen-Anne-Solus-146-9-600x400.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Embarkation Day \u2013 Bari<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After an early morning flight, we collected our luggage and headed straight to Silver Ray, where we were warmly greeted by Silversea representatives. As we were joining the cruise mid-journey, we checked in directly at the reception onboard rather than at the terminal.<\/p>\n<p>We were then escorted to our Superior Veranda suites, 6035 and 6029. The suites were spacious, with comfortable beds and plenty of room to relax. The bathroom was impressive, featuring double sinks, a large mirror, a massive walk-in shower, and a toilet. The suite\u2019s technology was equally impressive\u2014TV, lights, and air conditioning were all controlled via a tablet. One smart feature we appreciated was the automatic shutoff of the air conditioning when the balcony door was opened, preventing energy waste.<\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed welcome drinks at the Pool Bar, where we met fellow agents, followed by lunch at the Marquee. Later, we returned to our suite to freshen up before heading to dinner at Silver Note. The intimate venue featured live jazz, creating a wonderful ambiance. Reservations are required as the space is small and fills up quickly. We would recommend this restaurant for special occasions due to the personal touches they offer such as song requests. This began with a scenic coach ride, just over an hour long, during which our guide shared insights into Montenegro\u2019s natural beauty and rich history.<\/p>\n<p>At the vineyard, we were greeted with a traditional strong spirit used in their winemaking process, alongside delicious sweet treats served with homemade honey. After sampling these delicacies, we toured the vineyard\u2019s showroom, which featured a variety of homemade alcohols; this included white and red wine, brandy, and flavoured syrups. The family shared their winemaking history, deepening our appreciation for their craft.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of the visit was participating in the preparation of a traditional Montenegrin dish made with oil, corn flour, butter, and local cheese. Afterward, we enjoyed a lunch featuring local cheeses, homemade bread, meats, tomato salad, and the dish we had helped prepare\u2014a truly enriching cultural experience.<\/p>\n<p>We dined in the S.A.L.T Kitchen. The meal began with freshly baked warm bread, served with garlic aioli and pistachio butter\u2014the latter being a particular hit, with many of us reaching for seconds. Smoky, flavourful Korfu-inspired koftas followed, perfectly complemented by a refreshing sip of Greek white wine. We concluded the evening in the Dusk Bar for some post-dinner drinks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2 \u2013 Corfu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We began the day with a stroll around the old town, enjoyed live Greek music, and had lunch at a local caf\u00e9 before heading to the sea for a swim\u2014where we discovered that Freya isn\u2019t the strongest at treading water!<\/p>\n<p>Pre-dinner drinks were enjoyed at The Shelter (Champagne Bar). In the evening, the Marquee transformed into Hot Rocks, where we had the chance to cook our own meals on hot stones. Aprons were provided, but staff were also on hand to cook for you if preferred. This interactive dining experience was both fun and engaging.<\/p>\n<p>The entertainment onboard was excellent. I attended two shows in the theatre, where every seat had a great view of the stage. The Silver Ray band impressed with their performances, and the dancers were perfectly in sync. The &#8220;West End and Broadway&#8221; show was a standout, and we would gladly watch it again.<\/p>\n<p>We had a ship tour while docked in Corfu. During the ship tour, we also viewed a Medallion Suite, which was beautiful, although the bathroom was smaller compared to the Superior Veranda. The Medallion Suite\u2019s layout separated the bedroom from the living room, where the sofa converted into a sofa bed. While the Medallion Suite was lovely, we personally preferred the Superior Veranda\u2019s, as they offered everything we needed. However, we can also see why the Medallion Suite might appeal to others.<\/p>\n<p>The ship features a variety of restaurants, including The Marquee\/Hot Rocks, La Dame, Atlantide, Kaiseki, La Terrazza, S.A.L.T. Chef\u2019s Table, S.A.L.T. Kitchen, and Silver Note. Additionally, the Arts Caf\u00e9 provides a convenient spot for grabbing a hot drink, pastry, yogurt, or fruit salad, with the option to enjoy these in a quiet and bright setting. La Terrazza offers a buffet-style experience for breakfast and lunch, transforming into an \u00e0 la carte venue for dinner. Both Atlantide and The Marquee serve \u00e0 la carte breakfast without requiring reservations; however, due to the slower service at these restaurants, it is advisable to visit them on sea days or when time is not a constraint while docked in port. We were fortunate to dine at every restaurant except La Dame.<\/p>\n<p>The ship also has an array of bars, including the Panorama Lounge, S.A.L.T. Bar, Dusk Bar, Pool Bar, The Shelter, Dolce Vita and the Observation Lounge. While it is challenging to select a favourite among so many options, we particularly enjoyed dining at Atlantide and Hot Rocks. Our preferred bars were the Panorama Lounge, which featured a faux firepit with outdoor seating, and the Dusk Bar on deck 10, where we appreciated the live jazz music and refreshing sea breeze.<\/p>\n<p>The service onboard continued to exceed expectations. When Amy\u2019s sandal broke, she contacted our butler, who promised to fix it. By the time we returned from exploring Corfu, her sandal was as good as new\u2014 this is just one example of the impeccable service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3 \u2013 Argostoli, Cephalonia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With no pre-arranged excursions in Cephalonia, we had the chance to explore the island\u2019s natural beauty at our own pace.<\/p>\n<p>Early in the morning, we ventured out to try and spot the turtles Cephalonia is known for, and we were rewarded with sightings both near the pier and at a boat dock by a local restaurant, where we paused for refreshments to escape the 38-degree heat. These turtles had followed the fishing boats back to port, drawn by the fish remnants discarded by local fishermen.<\/p>\n<p>Lunch followed with Donatella at a local Greek restaurant, where we enjoyed Greek kebabs, Caesar salad, and, of course, a bottle of wine.<\/p>\n<p>For dinner, we dined at La Terrazza, followed by a lively karaoke night at the Panorama Lounge, where Hugh&#8217;s performance of &#8220;Roxanne&#8221; stole the show\u2014and yes, we captured it on video!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 4 \u2013 Day at Sea<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We began the day with breakfast at the Arts Caf\u00e9, a perfect spot to enjoy a quiet moment with a hot drink and pastry.<\/p>\n<p>We had the pleasure of dining at Kaiseki during our one day at sea. It was a fantastic lunch, perfectly suited for a light mid-day meal after a relaxing morning. Kaiseki\u2019s originality truly shines through its extraordinary dishes and beautiful presentation, even while maintaining a deep respect for tradition. When we were seated, we learned that their balanced menus are inspired by the five elements of Japanese nutritional cuisine and are designed to respect the equilibrium of yin and yang. The five dishes I tried were fresh, flavourful, and light, each with distinct elements of sweetness, sourness, and spice. These flavours were complemented by ginger, wasabi, and the saltiness from the chilli oil and soy sauce used for dipping. We were also informed that teppanyaki\u2014food prepared on a hot plate\u2014is available exclusively for evening diners, though there is an additional charge for this option. Fortunately, the daytime menu, which features a variety of sushi, sashimi, and other raw, Asian-inspired dishes (my personal favourite), is included in the cost of the cruise.<\/p>\n<p>Following lunch, we had an interactive cooking class at the S.A.L.T. lab. This hands-on experience allowed us to create savoury and sweet filo pastries while learning about the history of these Greek dishes from the chef. It was both informative and enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, with no hosted events or plans, we had the opportunity to try the in-suite dining. The process was simple and efficient, and we would highly recommend the experience for at least one evening. While the food was enjoyable, it leaned more toward \u201cBritish pub-style\u201d quality. We ordered a burger, which was juicy and came with a generous amount of cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onions. The meal was served with chips and onion rings, both of which were satisfying but didn\u2019t quite match the standard of the restaurant meals. We also ordered a hot chocolate, which was served beautifully in a teapot, allowing for two servings. This added a comforting touch to the meal, which was ideal for a relaxed evening in the suite. Although the food didn\u2019t reach the culinary heights of the ship\u2019s dining venues, it was exactly what was needed after a day of relaxation. For anyone seeking a casual, laid-back meal while enjoying a movie or quiet time in their suite, we believe in-suite dining is an option worth exploring.<\/p>\n<p>To finish the day, we attended another show in the theatre. This show was an &#8220;Elton John&#8221; tribute\u2014though the singer was fantastic, the dancers were a bit overwhelming for the performance. The day began with a coach tour of the island, where our guide provided valuable insights into Santorini\u2019s history. We then walked through the streets, taking in the stunning views, though there were fewer blue roofs than anticipated. At the Akrotiri site, we explored well-preserved buildings, including ancient beds, pots, and toilets, offering a unique glimpse into life thousands of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>After our excursion we had lunch at a Greek restaurant that looked out at sea, offering fantastic views of the ships and the volcano. Following lunch, we decided to take the 588 steps down to board the tender to take us back to the Silver Ray, rather than ride the donkeys. Each day offers a variety of ways to explore and enjoy the ship\u2019s impressive range of dining venues, each with its own unique atmosphere and inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Our culinary journey began with an al fresco lunch at the Marquee on deck ten, where we basked in the Bari sun following embarkation. While many dining locations impressed me, I was particularly drawn to the Marquee. Its thoughtfully designed canopy created a harmonious blend of sunlight and shade, setting the perfect stage for a Mediterranean outdoor lunch. The Marquee\u2019s lunch menu offers a wide array of options, and we indulged in several. From the Grill menu, we sampled the fish of the day\u2014mahi-mahi\u2014along with bruschetta and a grilled chicken salad. From the Spaccanapoli menu, we enjoyed an anchovy and mozzarella pizza. These intentionally smaller, flavourful plates were paired with a smooth white wine, expertly selected by our sommelier. It was a delightful introduction to dining on the Silver Ray.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, a pleasant surprise awaited us\u2014our gracious host, secured a reservation at the exclusive Silver Note on deck five. The aesthetic of Silver Note immediately captivated me, with its dimly lit, cozy environment accented by elegant gold and silver tones. This venue offers a full package of dining and entertainment. A talented jazz duo provided live music, taking personal requests and engaging the audience throughout the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Silver Note is an intimate late-night venue featuring small-plate dining with a menu that masterfully blends land and sea, elevated with luxurious touches like champagne and caviar. With six courses to choose from, each decision was difficult, but I couldn\u2019t pass on any. The attentive service is intentionally paced, allowing guests to savour both the exquisite dishes and the live entertainment. Standout dishes for me were the pan-fried scallops with champagne foam and caviar, and the grilled octopus with spicy sriracha sauce\u2014both far superior to the seafood I had tasted ashore in Santorini, a testament to the talent of the ship\u2019s chefs.<\/p>\n<p>We had breakfast in La Terrazza on deck four which was the perfect choice. By day, this casual buffet-style venue offers a variety of breakfast options, with the added pleasure of al fresco dining in the morning sun. The selection ranges from pastries and smoked salmon to heartier options like homemade porridge, which I enjoyed with fresh fruit, nuts, and a drizzle of sweet, floral honey. La Terrazza\u2019s bustling atmosphere, filled with both guests and staff, added to the overall experience.<\/p>\n<p>One dining experience I had eagerly anticipated was the S.A.L.T. Kitchen. Silversea\u2019s S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) concept intrigued me, as it connects guests to the local cultures and flavours of each destination. At S.A.L.T. Kitchen, you can choose between the Terrain menu, inspired by the day\u2019s port of call, or the Voyage menu, which highlights standout dishes from the entire voyage. The meal began with freshly baked warm bread, served with garlic aioli and pistachio butter\u2014the latter being a particular hit, with many of us reaching for seconds. Smoky, flavourful Korfu-inspired koftas followed, perfectly complemented by a refreshing sip of Greek white wine. For the main course, I selected a sumptuous fillet of Arctic char. However, the meal\u2019s highlight was undoubtedly the dessert\u2014a rich fig cake with Chantilly cream. While some initially doubted the choice, envy quickly spread once they had a taste of this delightful treat.<\/p>\n<p>Dining aboard the Silver Ray is much more than a mere culinary experience\u2014it\u2019s an immersive journey that adds depth and richness to the overall voyage. Each venue, with its unique atmosphere and meticulously crafted menus, offers an unforgettable dining experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disembarkation \u2013 Piraeus (Athens)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For our last day, we had breakfast in the Marquee with everyone else and then caught a taxi into Athen\u2019s where we were lucky enough to spend the day adventuring around this famous ancient city allowing us to experience different ancient relics and extraordinary buildings which gave a reel insight to the life of the ancient Greeks.\u00a0\u00a0We started our journey on a hop-on hop-off tour bus which first took us to many famous sites, but the Acropolis and Panathenaic\u00a0Stadium were our favourites. The Acropolis of Athens is the most striking and complete ancient Greek monumental complex still existing in our times.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, our experience on Silver Ray is one we will always treasure. The staff and crew went above and beyond to ensure we had an unforgettable journey. The food was exceptional, and we are already longing for the pumpkin pancakes and black cod.
