REINVENTING THE ART OF SAILING

Redefining an entire generation of sailing vessels is no small feat, especially when large merchant sailing ships began vanishing from the seas over a century ago. With the dominance of motor yachts, the science and romance of wind-powered travel seemed almost forgotten.

The development of the Orient Express Sailing Yachts project brought a unique set of challenges, as today's safety, crew, and efficiency standards are vastly different from those of traditional sailing ships. Even hull designs have transformed—from the sleek, streamlined forms designed for trade wind routes to bulkier shapes built for heavy cargo.

Designing a 1,500-square-meter (16,145-square-feet) sail posed another formidable task; most sailmakers abandoned the idea due to the immense forces involved. Yet, the engineers at Chantiers de l'Atlantique embraced the challenge, creating a patented sail using carbon fiber-reinforced glass panels instead of standard woven
cloth. The entire rigging is fully automated, ensuring optimal performance with minimal crew input.

This innovative sail plan, paired with powerful hull lines, gives Corinthian its unmistakable silhouette and remarkable performance on the open sea.
