Three significant milestones have marked the next chapter in the evolution of the Explora Journeys fleet, signaling major progress for the MSC Group’s luxury cruise brand.
The company celebrated the float-out of its third 900-passenger ship, held a traditional coin ceremony for Explora IV, and commenced steel cutting for Explora V. These maritime traditions were carried out at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa, Italy.
Fleet Expansion on Track
The fleet, which will comprise six ships in total by 2028, is progressing on schedule according to the company. The first two vessels are currently operating at near-full capacity, with the third sister ship set to join the fleet next year. Explora IV and V will follow in 2027, with Explora VI completing the fleet the following year.
The €3.5 billion investment in Explora Journeys’ six-ship fleet represents a substantial long-term commitment to both redefining ocean travel and supporting the Italian shipbuilding industry.
Environmental Innovation at the Forefront
From Explora III onwards, the four newest ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a transitional fuel that offers substantial emission reductions compared to conventional marine fuels. These vessels are also designed to accommodate renewable alternatives such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG.
Explora V and VI will feature next-generation fuel cell technology capable of converting LNG into hydrogen, further reducing emissions while in port. All ships are equipped with advanced environmental technologies, including shore power capabilities that eliminate emissions during port stays and underwater noise management systems designed to protect marine life.
Energy-efficient onboard systems ensure optimal engine performance while reducing fuel consumption across the fleet.
