Cunard achieves a ground-breaking milestone as the brand attains the capability for its entire fleet to connect to shore power where available when docked.
The successful plugging in of shore power capabilities on all three Cunard ships – RMS Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth – comes ahead of their new ship Queen Anne set to launch in May 2024, which will depart on her maiden voyage with this technology already installed.
Shore power technology enables docked ships to connect directly to a specially fitted land-based source, allowing cruise ships to switch off their onboard engines and operate on electricity sourced entirely from the local electrical grid, reducing emissions and noise whilst in port. The ability for the ships to plug into local grids already exists at many key ports, including Queen Anne’s homeport of Southampton. As part of the European Union’s Fit for 55 programme, all main ports in the European Union are scheduled to offer ships the ability to connect to shoreside electricity by 2030.
