Are Future Generations at Risk of Losing Precious Childhood Memories?
In today’s digital era, the way we preserve and share memories is changing rapidly. According to recent research by luxury British cruise line Cunard, a generational gap in our collective history is emerging, with the digital age contributing to the decline of printed photographs. To address this, Cunard has launched a unique initiative, inviting the public to help safeguard precious moments through a new physical exhibition curated by renowned British photographer Mary McCartney, commemorating 185 years of ocean travel.
A recent international study reveals a staggering 265 billion images are taken annually across the UK and the U.S., yet many of these remain unseen—hidden away on digital devices. With 97% of photos now captured on smartphones, only 3% of people preserve their memories in printed photo albums.

The Digital Dilemma: Memories Buried in Devices
This overreliance on digital storage is raising concerns about a potential generational memory gap. The research highlights that 72% of people worry future generations will lose access to cherished memories without physical photos. Alarmingly, just over half (51%) of adults feel confident their digital photos will still be accessible in 50 years.
A Lack of Preservation Planning
The study also underscores a lack of preparation for safeguarding memories. While 75% of adults intend to preserve and share photos of their children or younger relatives, others have yet to consider this. The primary reasons cited include not having thought about it (38%) or assuming a lack of interest in these photos (33%).
This trend threatens the legacy that printed photos and albums once provided. With 53% of adults admitting they’ve been forced to delete photos due to storage issues or have lost images when their devices failed, countless sentimental moments risk being lost forever.
Preserving History: Cunard’s ‘Sea of Glamour’ Exhibition
To combat this growing issue, Cunard is calling on guests, employees, and celebrities to share their unforgettable images captured aboard its ships. These contributions will be featured in the ‘Sea of Glamour’ exhibition, set to debut at Liverpool’s iconic Liver Building in May 2025.
The exhibition will showcase a stunning array of images, blending Cunard’s archives of Hollywood icons, musicians, politicians, and royalty with newly submitted photos from the public. Together, these images will create a vibrant timeline of nearly two centuries of transatlantic travel.
The exhibition’s centerpiece will be a new portrait by Mary McCartney, taken on the opening day. This photograph will capture Queen Anne’s Icons in Liverpool, offering a fresh perspective on Cunard’s deep connection to the city.
A Global Celebration of Memories
Siân Wilks, Cunard Archivist at the University of Liverpool Library, highlighted the significance of the project:
“As a unique resource capturing Cunard’s unrivalled 185-year history, the Cunard archive is an incredible collection accessible to all. It’s exciting to see how today’s events will shape the archive of the future and capture the stories of those connected to the brand.”
Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, emphasized the importance of this initiative:
“For 185 years, our ships have been at the heart of unforgettable moments for millions of guests and crew. This is an opportunity to celebrate those memories and the stories they tell. By sharing your experiences, you’ll help Mary McCartney create something truly special—an exhibition that brings Cunard’s incredible history to life for everyone to enjoy.”
